don't have competitions

highest listener numbers in the UK

capital, kiss, heart, smooth radio

multiple stations under ownership

global owns many stations

they run different stations as a method to make profit for the company through their use of advertisements and endorsement


regional

can be public or commercial

targeted at a particular region E.g. Radio Sheffield or TX1 Radio

tailor news to that area such as road reports


non for profit radio

developed not to make a profit and keeps costs minimal

mainly found in hospitals and universities

tailor content around listeners

a lot of radio Dj's start their careers from university radio


Community radio

form of non for profit radio

produce and broadcast their own programs 

covers a small geographical area

they can cater for a certain demographic


Internet radio

uses the internet as a form of distribution for the content rather than radio waves

proper term is webcasting

streaming media on a global scale

performed live instead of being prerecorded

anyone with a device can connect and listen

bases it on niche audiences found on a global scale
